Meet our new Math Teacher in Residence, J!

This past year we had the pleasure of growing our NumWorks family by adding an additional Math Teacher in Residence, J!

How long have you been a teacher?

I have been a teacher for 33.5 years. I have taught in middle and high schools, a semester at the college level, and for an online school.

Which subject is your favorite?

In math it would have to be Geometry and Calculus - and I see them so intertwined! I love teaching CS as well, particularly introductory Python and Java courses

Why did you choose to join the NumWorks team?

I have been using the NumWorks calculator since 2018-2019, and I have enjoyed it being my personal device to the point that in the last 3 years it was the only device I went to. When I saw an opening to be an MTR, I wanted a chance to share this calculator with other teachers and schools. It also gave me an opportunity to relocate back to Portland where most of my children live, so it was a win-win situation!

What is your favorite NumWorks app?

Hard to say, but since I’m also a computer science teacher, I’d have to say the Python app! I love that the calculator has the ability to add Python programs - even with modules like Numpy and Matplotlib - and increase functionality of the calculator. At my previous position, we were integrating Python programming into our Geometry and Precalculus courses, and having this app can be a game changer!

What is your favorite feature of the calculator?

The included vocabulary that is prevalent throughout all the apps! Reinforcing vocabulary and having a tool that is not just about finding an answer but also helping students learn math is one of the things I love! I would say that tied for that is the amount of information that can be found through the Additional Results option.

What do you hope to accomplish in your first year at NumWorks?

My goal is to grow the market in the states assigned to me (and beyond) by demonstrating to teachers what an amazing tool for teaching math the calculator is. I want to become more well-versed in all that the calculator and board can do and help build the activities portion of the website.

What has been your favorite part of working at NumWorks?

The people! The opportunity to meet nearly everyone, whether they are in the US or in France, has been a wonderful experience. Everyone has been extremely friendly and helpful. And, if I’m being honest, I do enjoy working remotely!

What do you want to tell teachers?

That the NumWorks calculator is something special. Instead of having to take a piece of technology and try to adapt it to the classroom, here is a device that was designed with the classroom and student learning in mind!
