Meet our new Math Teacher in Residence, Kylie!

This summer we had the pleasure of growing our NumWorks family by adding an additional Math Teacher in Residence, Kylie!

How long have you been a teacher?

I have been a teacher for 6 years.

Which subject is your favorite?

My favorite subject is math, but specifically Algebra!

Why did you choose to join the NumWorks team?

I chose to join the NumWorks team because of the incredible impact I witnessed firsthand in my own classroom. After introducing the NumWorks calculator to my students, I saw a monumental shift not only in their confidence, but also in their engagement and overall understanding of math. That transformation made me passionate about sharing this tool with other educators. I wanted to help schools and teachers experience the same positive change I did, and support them in bringing this powerful resource to their students.

What is your favorite NumWorks app?

My favorite Numworks app is grapher! One of the things I love most about the Grapher app is how clearly it displays the key points of a function, such as the maximum, minimum, x- and y-intercepts, and intersection points. Not only does it plot these points accurately, but it also labels them using the correct mathematical vocabulary. This is such a valuable feature for students because it reinforces the language they need to understand and use in class. By repeatedly seeing terms like “maximum” or “x-intercept” next to the visual representation, students build a stronger connection between the vocabulary and the concept, making it easier for them to apply this knowledge during instruction, discussions, and assessments. You can use grapher to do many discovery activities in class, and with the intuitive interface, it takes less timed doing step by step calculator instructions.

What is your favorite feature of the calculator?

My favorite feature of the NumWorks calculator is how seamlessly it integrates mathematical vocabulary with the concepts being taught. Whether you’re working in the Grapher, Statistics, or another app, the calculator doesn’t just display numbers, it also labels them using both the symbol and the corresponding word. For example, in the Statistics app, when students view 1-variable stats, they see not only the symbol for the mean, but also the word “mean” right next to it. This dual representation helps students make those critical connections between symbols and terminology, which is especially helpful for learners who struggle with abstract notation. It supports deeper understanding and helps build math literacy.

What do you hope to accomplish in your first year at NumWorks?

In my first year at NumWorks, I hope to share my personal experience and help other teachers see just how transformative this calculator can be in their own classrooms. When I first introduced NumWorks to my students, the shift in their engagement, confidence, and understanding of math was immediate and powerful. I want to support other educators in creating that same kind of environment—one where students feel empowered to explore, make connections, and truly understand the math they’re learning. Whether it’s through training sessions, classroom visits, or one-on-one support, my goal is to help teachers integrate NumWorks in meaningful ways that make math more accessible, visual, and student-friendly.

What has been your favorite part of working at NumWorks?

My favorite part of working at NumWorks has been being part of a team made up entirely of math teachers who have all experienced the transformative power of this calculator in our own classrooms. There’s a shared excitement and genuine love for what NumWorks can do for students and teachers, and it’s incredibly energizing to work alongside people who are just as passionate about math education as I am. We all have a common goal which is to spread the word and help educators across the U.S. see how NumWorks can make math more engaging, intuitive, and accessible for every student.

What do you want to tell teachers?

I want to tell teachers that NumWorks is truly a game-changer in the math classroom. It’s intuitive, student-friendly, and built with educators in mind. If you’ve ever felt frustrated by outdated technology or watched students struggle to connect with abstract math concepts, this calculator can make a real difference. It supports deeper understanding, builds confidence, and encourages exploration. As teachers, we’re always looking for tools that genuinely support student learning, and NumWorks does exactly that.
